This has been classified as a cystic cochleovestibular dysplasia (incomplete partition type I). The vestibule also shows pronounced enlargement. e, f Patient 2: on axial CT images of this deaf child, a widened cochlea without a modiolus renders a cystic appearance of the cochlea. There is no development of the cochlea anteriorly hence this developmental anomaly can be classified as a cochlear aplasia. On the left, axial ( b, c) and coronal ( d) CT shows an IAC bending posteriorly towards a cystic dilated vestibular system. The internal auditory canal (IAC) is also absent. On the right ( a) axial CT shows a small cyst in place of the cochleovestibular system, corresponding to labyrinthine aplasia. a- d Patient 1: a 6-month-old girl presenting with congenital deafness has bilateral congenital malformations of the labyrinth on CT. after a gestational viral infection such as by rubella or cytomegalovirus, due to a genetic cause or the result of a combination of both, as in aminoglucoside-induced deafness with underlying mitochondrial DNA mutations. The endolymphatic duct is connected to the saccule and courses through a bony canal-the vestibular aqueduct-to form the endolymphatic sac in the posterior fossa (Figs. The vestibule harbours the oval window the stapes footplate is attached to the oval window. The vestibular system is located posterior to the cochlea and contains the vestibule with the saccule and utricle and three semicircular canals which are oriented perpendicular to each other. The cochlea is connected to the middle ear by the round window. The modiolus containing the spiral ganglion can, however, be visualised in the centre of the cochlea. The scala media, containing the organ of Corti and filled with endolymph, cannot be visualised separately with current imaging systems. These scalae are connected to each other at the apical tip of the cochlea (helicotrema) and they contain perilymph. Within each turn the cochlea is divided into the scala tympani and scala vestibuli by the osseous spiral lamina. The normal cochlea consists of two-and-a-half turns separated by interscalar septae. The inner ear comprises the cochlea, the vestibular system and the endolymphatic duct and sac. The display slice thickness should not exceed 1.5 mm. Contiguous or overlapping sections from the superior most mastoid air cells to the stylomastoid foramen should be obtained with the gantry angle parallel to the infraorbital-meatal line. With multidetector CT, images can be reconstructed in any desired plane, obviating the need for direct coronal scanning. Temporal bone CT should consist of both axial and coronal images. MRI will render supplementary information on the fine intralabyrinthine structures. CT forms an ideal means to evaluate the bony details of the otic capsule and labyrinth and will also allow evaluating the course of the facial nerve canal and eventual associated anomalies of middle ear structures and the external auditory canal. In patients requiring anaesthesia, these exams should be planned in one session. These techniques render complementary information. Imaging of the inner ear is performed with computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ![]()

Pietersen was born in Pietermaritzburg to an Afrikaner father, Jannie, and an English mother, Penny, and abandoned South Africa cricket as a teenager in protest against the racial quota system which he felt was unfairly restricting his opportunities at KwaZulu Natal. He was dropped for the final Test at The Oval and omitted from World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, England predictable struggling in his absence. The ECB regarded the matter as an unacceptable display of player power. Pietersen's frustration had a disruptive effect on England's summer Test series against South Africa. Their differences simmered throughout a troubled tour of India and when the rift became public Pietersen was forced to resign early in the New Year with a disenchanted Moores sacked on the same day.Īnother dispute arose in May 2012 when Pietersen, agitating for the freedom to play for longer in the Indian Premier League - where his popularity was unquestioned - briefly announced his retirement from all forms of limited-overs international cricket. The English media, which has at times been vitriolic - not to say personal - about his rebellious streak has generally recognised that he has few peers.Īn attempt to introduce him into the inner sanctum, by appointing him England captain in August 2008, lasted only five months as his relationship with the coach, Peter Moores, was uncomfortable from the outset. But his celebrity status, individualistic streak and outspoken ways often grated with the England cricket authorities who prefer their star names to be more malleable and conservative. He had no choice but to commit himself to the life of a T20 specialist.įor many England cricket fans, no name sparks more excitement. ![]() ![]() After more than nine years and many controversies, Pietersen's England career was at an end, a fact he wrestled with interminably: accepting it one day, holding out hope of a miraculous return the next. But Pietersen's ability to command attention on the field has been matched only by his ability to divide opinion off it. In 2013, he became the highest England run-scorer in all international forms of the game combined. His 8,181 Test runs at 47.28 in 104 Tests had few rivals in England's history and his record in limited-overs cricket was also outstanding. A brazen belief in his own ability, moments of outrageous unorthodoxy and, at times, a surprising vulnerability on and off the field have all combined to give him great box-office appeal. His flamboyant strokeplay was at the heart of many of England's finest performances for a decade. Whatever view you held, Pietersen deserved to be recognised as one of the most captivating cricketers to pull on an England shirt. When he was unceremoniously dumped from England's set up early in 2014, with lawyers at the ready on all sides, he was presented by those in authority as an egotistical individualist whose reluctance to respect those in charge forever undermined attempts to build a strong team ethic. It’s one of the few projectors we tested that can display video through USB-C, something that’s rare even on ones that cost twice as much. It also can connect to devices via HDMI, USB-A or USB-C-the last of which can either be for input from a laptop or similar, or for power delivery from a power bank or wall charger. ![]() Like most modern projectors, the GS50 runs Android TV, which gives it access to most streaming platforms (except Netflix, so we had to use a bizarre workaround ), allowing you to stream video easily once connected to your home Wi-Fi network. It has automatic vertical keystoning (that’s adjusting for the low angle you’re projecting it up at, transforming a trapezoid into the proper rectangular shape) and eye-protection mode that will interrupt the projection if it detects you walking in front of it. The GS50 isn’t the brightest or sharpest projector we tried, nor does it have the deepest, darkest blacks-but it’s still plenty good enough, projecting a pleasing video for the hypersaturated colors and fast motion of “Thor: Love and Thunder.” It also had one of the better battery life results in our testing, going for a full three hours and 45 minutes while in eco mode. And the retro design is fun, especially in a category that can skew rather boring. The GS50 also comes with an adjustable built-in stand and a faux-leather carrying handle as well as a handy carrying case for schlepping around that will also keep the projector from getting dusty in winter storage. ![]() That’s not enough to survive a rainstorm or a tumble out of a moving car, but if a marauding child splashes it with soda or a tipsy guest knocks it off a low table, it’s not an instant write-off. It’s splashproof, and drop proof to 70 centimeters (a little over 2 feet). While it’s a bit heavier and bigger than other, similarly priced devices including the XGimi Halo+ and the Anker Capsule 3, both of which we address below, the advantage is the GS50 has a layer of protection that no other devices bothers with. With the GS50, BenQ has established what most other outdoor projector brands seem to have missed: This thing is designed to go outdoors. Input options: Wi-Fi, USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, Bluetooth. No battery indicator in the user interface. Not the brightest, sharpest or best video quality overall.Smart design features like an adjustable built-in stand and water and drop resistance. This is a good projector made great thanks to water resistance and impact protection. How to set up a good outdoor home theater.Runner-up outdoor projector with better video quality. And Anker’s Nebula Solar Portable is our lower-price pick. For stunning 4K video at a higher price, you should choose Epson’s Home Cinema 2350. If you value a brighter, sharper image over that outdoor-proofing, we recommend XGimi’s Halo+. While there is a legion of projectors that are good at putting up a video, one stands out from the rest in being better at the “outdoor” part of “outdoor projectors.” The BenQ GS50 doesn’t just show movies and TV well it also has a useful stand to adjust its angle and comes with drop and splash protection to guard it against the vagaries of outdoor entertaining. A good portable projector can be used indoors and out, with enough battery to last an entire Marvel movie, a bright enough image that you can see it before the sun has totally set and enough built-in streaming and mirroring tools that you can watch just about anything without needing to juggle extra cords and cables. ![]() But a projector isn’t limited in use to just a few warm months of the year-you can pull it out during sleepovers for a four-player round of Mario Kart at family movie night or when car camping in the spring. It finalizes with a very underwhelming, trailer style Avatar short film with a few interactive lights projected on the floor that will react according to your movement. These are obviously aimed at children, but even on that regard they are a bit tacky and would have probably be more interesting 15 years ago, and you can experience them if you don't mind waiting in a long line for it. It has a few Avatar related sculptures and animatronic, as well as a couple of gimmicky attractions like "Avatar yourself" which is basically creating an avatar version of yourself, and dragon flying simulator, where you have to flap your arms to fly a 3D dragon on a screen, or the lame fiery spirit shadow, that gives fiery effects to your shadow on display. It has some cool things, but it is definitely underwhelming when you compare it to the pictures, particularly the ones taken at night. Like the title says, it is overpriced for what it is. If you only have time for one museum, I would prefer this one over the Flower Dome because this one is much more unique. For us, it took about 30 to 45 minutes to walk through and explore everything from entry to exit. There are a lot of high winding walkways, so just beware if you’re afraid of heights. At the time of year we went (September 2022), they were prepping for an Avatar exhibit so it seems like there might be something special going on at certain times if you’re lucky enough to catch it. There are different levels of flowers and plants you can take the elevator too. Luckily, it wasn’t too crowded at the time we went, so we didn’t have to wait too long. Inside, you’ll want to take a pic with the iconic waterfall at the entrance. There was no wait and they just scanned our ticket barcode. I’d definitely recommend purchasing tickets beforehand because the tickets to purchase on site looked like it would take an extra 20 minutes or so. ![]() We purchased it through Klook, and they have various combo options. We had a combined Gardens by the Bay ticket, which included entrance to the Cloud Forest and the Flower Dome. It definitely lives up to its expectations and is not one of the “tourist traps”.
